What Is LCL Shipping?
Any shipment that is not large enough to fill an entire standard sized container and therefore needs to be grouped with another consignment to be shipped to the same destination.
Our Less-than-Container Load solution will ensure your shipment reaches its destination safe and secure. We pride ourselves in having the large LCL network globally, including remote locations.
An FCL/LCL contract is a mode of shipment by ocean freight, also called “pier/house”. The charger takes the packages in a container and delivers a cargo which is destined for several different recipients. On arrival to the port destination, the packages are separated. They are then put at the disposal of the different recipients or delivered to them.
The FCL/LCL contract uses two types of containerization:
- FCL (Full Container Load), or full container: the client’s goods are transported in a filled and sealed container;
- LCL (Less than Container Load) or grouped shipment: the client’ goods are not numerous enough to fill a container, the goods of several clients are put into one container.
The different stages of FCL/LCL shipment:
A pharmaceuticals manufacturer in India wishes to ship goods to Jamaica, where the products will be sold to several pharmacies. He chooses the FCL/LCL shipment mode.
- The consignment is transported by truck to the port of departure.
- The goods go through customs clearance.
- The packages are unloaded from the truck then loaded into a container.
- The container is loaded onto the cargo ship.
- The cargo ship arrives at the destination port in Jamaica.
- At port, the container is unloaded.
- The container is opened, and the packages are separated according to the different recipients.
- The packages are delivered by truck to the different pharmacies.

Yes, you can track & trace your shipment
While commonly confused with LCL, a loose cargo shipment is one that is not palletized. This word can refer to shipments that don’t need to be palletized and/or can’t be containerized because of their size.
Loose cargo is a term that is sometimes used to describe items that have not yet been palletized. Almost all carriers demand that items be palletized to reduce damage and facilitate loading and unloading.
When shipping LCL, you only pay for the volume you require, rather than a set charge as with FCL.
This depends on the countries being shipped from and being shipped to, for more information contact your local office.
